10 - 7: post-september malaise tuesday |
listening |
- TMG 'Goths', favorite song 'Rain in Soho'
- OTGW soundtrack (see 'watching' section), also the 'for Sara' tape from the show that they released as a physical object at some point, it's cute. I wish they hadn't added so much noise to make it seem 'authentic'
|
reading |
- finished Evil as Humans. I liked it! it was charming!
- still reading "On Repentance and Repair" by Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg even tho the actual holidays have passed, will probably slowly continue to book club it through the fall
- read the OTGW art book
- like one chapter into "Blindsight" by Greg Egan (thank you pngjpeg for the rec), I love the style so far but it's too early to tell anything else really
|
watching |
- rewatched OTGW so that boyfriend could see it for the first time. 'tis the season, and he hadn't watched it before. I always get so emotional at the end lol. something something feeling seen as an anxious older sibling.
|
playing |
- continuing to get better at mtg cube draft
- starting playing Hades again to remind myself of the vibes, I think my brother is getting me Hades II as a birthday present :3
- more disco elysium. I have officially hit the church. Egg Head is so fucking funny also

- finally used what was left of bf's mom's kimchi to make kimchi fried rice. stir fried some cubed spam in there instead of bacon, 10/10 meal.
- made sheet pan miso chicken with radishes again, it's been a minute since this one came in rotation, but bone in skin on thighs were buy one get two free the other day and I was like. well. chicken time. gonna freeze like 8 thighs for future recipe-ing. served with the tiny type of couscous and fresh parsley.

misc |
- long time no post! it's been a little rough out here I won't lie! but we persevere! I was assigned Public Talk at the big conference at the end of the year and I'm already shitting myself about it a bit, not to mention that I STILL HAVE NOT DONE. MY PRELIMS. explodes. other grad students will know what I mean when I say that trying to get anyone on your committee to do Anything, including just Answering An Email, is like pulling fucking teeth.

10 - 14: birth week post |
listening |
|
reading |
- re-read it's about the bones
- more Blindsight! I'm about halfway through. it whips ass. I was expecting it to be kind of adventure/thriller-ish but it's definitely veering into horror in a way that's really fun.
|
watching |
- for a little pre-birthday shindig I had some friends over and we watched Beetlejuice (planned) and The Dead Don't Die (unplanned)! former remains the cult classic it ever was, I haven't rewatched it since I was a kid so some of the jokes that didn't land then sure do land now. I have zero interest in watching the reboot, especially since according to wikipedia they are planning a Third One. jesus christ. anyways. latter movie was...fine......definitely not one I will ever really rewatch. the fourth wall breakage at the end made me roll my eyes back into my skull. it was fine. Tilda Swinton is really sexy
- some mtg videos: Rhystic Studies The Molting House, There Are Skeletons Within Us, ; Vagabond Gallery The BODY HORROR of Phyrexia: All Will Be One
|
playing |
- I have put twenty hours into Hades II since Friday. really fun! did have to turn god mode back on! I am not good at video games! I'm doing this the same style as I did Hades OG which is I have my god mode file (I'm at...I think 66% damage resist now?) so that I can actually. progress the plot. and once I have a better handle on the vibes/controls/strats I will make a non-god mode save file. I have reached Chronos twice but not beat him yet, and have only barely made it past the first boss top-side. Images: my first Olympus win, funny little Hera v Zeus thing that I think was the source of many, many Greek myths:
- did a stone soup draft with some friends and I won't lie it was fun as fuck. not all of my group has their own cards, me included, so three of our six people brought 90 cards each. I had Six Chaos Orbs in my deck. it ruled.
|
making |
- bf glazed this teacup..laid on a little too thick so the bottom bubbled, probably not food safe, but it's cute regardless

|
eating |
- insane charcuterie board that my friend put together for my Beetlejuice watch party. sand worm shaped snax!!!

- for the party I also made mulled wine and these beetlejuice themed cookies! did not take pics of these unfortunately, but I just used normal cocoa powder instead of black cocoa powder and the stripes were still pretty good. if anyone has tips for what to do with all the wine-mulled oranges in my fridge let me know. maybe a marmalade?

misc |
- it is my birthday this week :-) I shan't say which day for the sake of infosec but I am oldger now

listening |
- bear with me this requires some explaining. so on Saturday afternoon I was like "man, I wonder how the local no kings protest went, I couldn't go, lemme check my city's subreddit to make sure nothing bad happened". I go on the subreddit. no news! yay. while I'm on there I see a flier for "free noise show at [local arts/community center] tonight, blindfolds provided". I go okayyy what. I tell my friend and she immediately is like I WANT TO GO ! so I was like fuck it, you're going, I'll go. I put together a cute little outfit. I'm walking over. I get a phone call from her. "I'm at the building but there's. a paranormal conference in here? I walked in and everyone looked at me and I'm high so I don't know what to do". I go "babygirl I am almost there, hold tight". turns out the ground level was hosting a random, like. local film guild meetup? but because it's october it was horror/paranormal themed, they had a psychic and a ghost hunter with a table chatting and a guy with a theremin ??? and the noise show was in the basement. so between sets we did go upstairs to chat with theremin guy and take a random ... DVD? CD? from the paranormal guy's table. I don't have anything to play it with but I am so curious what's on it. anyways I had never been to a noise show before but I did enjoy it. the first act was very "random instruments playing random notes and a guy screaming into a microphone at random intervals" which was fine, but I liked the other three a lot. very sound-bath, meditative almost. my friend called said it was like "flossing your teeth but for your brain" and I was like yeah sure. anyways I will not link or list any of the artists because it is so hyperlocal as to immediately doxx me but if you're curious DM me :]

reading |
- finished Blindsight! it was good as fuck. you can read it here for free actually, yay creative commons. there was a very good reveal at the end, I enjoyed the cast of characters, the plot was very cool. enjoyed.
|
watching |
- Rhystic Studies Summer of the Gaak; played a halloween themed cube and my friend got a Gaak combo going and we sure did all get Gaak'd on
|
playing |
|
making |
- starting the attempt at making a sake container for my mom as a holiday present to match the sake cups I made her last year! this is challenging! my internet history looks insane, lots of googling "choking and collaring tips" -> "choking and collaring tips pottery". so far I have two kind of cute little vases and one fucked up one that will probably go in the reclaim bucket. I also have some cute latte mugs in the work, I don't have a pic of the trimmed one I've done so far but it's cute. the vases will end up holiday presents for other people most likely

- so many fucking plots for work. not much else I've been in the Hades Hole
|
eating |
- had some milk go sour so I made ricotta/farmers cheese and then Ricotta Pasta with Beef! not bad. I am curious how it will freeze.
|
misc |
- we are approaching one month without having any word or feedback from my actual advisor. just her husband. ok
